Case filed against student for using petrol bomb as Diwali celebration

A police case has been filed against a student from the Rajiv College of Ayurveda in Hassan, Karnataka, after a video of Diwali celebration with a makeshift petrol bomb went viral.
The incident involved Kiran H, an intern at the college pursuing a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, who reportedly siphoned petrol from his motorcycle, filling a plastic bag fitted with a cracker bomb. He ignited the device on the road near the college, creating a loud blast while his friends recorded the event.

The video drew public attention due to the recklessness of the act, which sparked concerns about public safety. After the video started circulating a week after Diwali, Hassan’s Superintendent of Police (SP) announced that a case had been registered against Kiran and two other final-year students involved in the incident, citing public nuisance and endangerment.
The SP stated, “Three final-year students celebrated Diwali with petrol, creating a public nuisance. We have registered a case in connection with the incident.”
The Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) terminal for petrol and diesel loading and unloading is located within half a kilometre of the Rajiv College of Ayurveda hostel. This terminal is within a government-declared restricted zone that extends two kilometres around the HPCL unit, covering the college as well.
Following the circulation of the video showing students setting off a petrol bomb near this restricted area, police have launched an investigation based on the footage to assess any breaches of safety or legal regulations.
